Dutton Hollow on the Trent & Mersey Canal Repaired!

GOOD NEWS – Following last September’s breach at Dutton Hollow on the Trent & Mersey Canal, we are pleased to say this has now been repaired by the Canal and River Trust together with its volunteers. CaRT will be joined by the BBC ‘One Show’ for the event to officially re-open the newly restored canal live at 7pm., this Thursday, 2nd May, and this will be followed by speeches and the official cutting of the ribbon. This means the Cheshire Ring is now fully open for your holiday.

Narrowboat journey through a winter wonderland

Every now and then we ask for willing volunteers to move our narrowboat’s for us from one base to another, generally before the start of the season.

Nicholas and his team certainly had his work cut out for him on his journey up to Napton with ‘Princess’ Leah this March. Normally at this time of year the worst you can expect would be a bit of rain, but this eventful journey was filled with ice, snow, trees down and bridges iced shut! But the intrepid team made it and delivered the boat early so that it was ready for hire.

Nicholas says “Thank goodness the boat had central heating, and we had come with many warm layers of clothes!!”. Fortunately for us he’s keen to help us out again in the future.

The snowy weather seems to be finally moving on from the UK, and spring is well on its way. We don’t expect many of our holiday guests to have to cope with conditions like these in April!

Horse’s head sculptures set to cause a stir in Scotland

Two brand new Black Prince Narrowboats (‘Yasmin’ and ‘Sarah’) will be chugging their way up to their Scottish base in Falkirk shortly to be ready for the 2013 season starting in March. At the same time, individual steel sections for two huge equine sculptures set to transform the Falkirk skyline are arriving at a local depot.

Known as The Kelpies, this pair of 300 tonne steel-plated horse’s heads will become a centrepiece of the Helix, a major land transformation project between Falkirk and Grangemouth currently under construction. The huge structures, standing 30 metres tall, will be assembled on the Helix site throughout the summer of 2013.

The Kelpies are the creation of Glasgow-based sculptor, Andy Scott. Andy’s inspiration was the working horse as a powerhouse of the early industrial revolution, in particular as the first source of locomotion for barges on the very canal which The Kelpies will soon inhabit.

If you wanted a close up view of The Kelpies under construction, you can travel from the Falkirk Wheel, on the Forth & Clyde canal, on a Black Prince Narrowboat. The Kelpies will be sited at a new lock being built near lock 2 on the Forth & Clyde, so there is a trip of some 2 and a half hours down through the 14 locks to arrive at the Helix site.

On the way a variety of restaurants and pubs are passed, and at the sea lock basin it is a quiet and interesting place to stay overnight with good moorings.

The One Show team took a trip down the Trent & Mersey Canal to check on works following a breach. The breach occurred in September 2012 at Dutton Hollow near Preston Brook, following a (long!) period of heavy rain. The repair is expected to be completed by spring. Anyone that wants to keep up to date with the latest breach repair news as it happens, the Canal and River Trust have started a diary of the restoration works.
