Leighton Buzzard and return, canal boat holiday
42 Miles, 63 Locks, 1 Week Cruise, 8 hours per day (ROUTE B)
Travel anti-clockwise from the Black Prince London base in Middlesex for a picturesque canal boat holiday towards the market town of Leighton Buzzard.
This cruise is along the Grand Union Canal, a feat of engineering brilliant that, at 286 miles long, is the longest canal in Britain. The main route stretches for 137 miles and connects London and Birmingham.
The picturesque route takes you on via Uxbridge, a bustling outer suburb of London and the base of The Parliamentary Army during the English Civil War. The location where the main parties negotiated during the War, a lovely public house called The Crown and Treaty, can still be visited.
Follow the course of the River Colne and on through to Harefield, a pretty hilltop village. Go and see St Mary the Virgin Church, the oldest building in the area.
From there you travel through the Chilterns, a tranquil setting awarded “Area of Natural Beauty” status in 1965. The stunning open landscape was used in pre-Roman times as a safe route across Iron Age England, and significant Roman remains are still present in the area.
The Chilterns feature various walking and cycling routes. If walking is your thing, plan ahead as the sheer number of designated routes can be overwhelming.
Once you have finished admiring the scenery, you can continue your cruise over the summit until you reach Leighton Buzzard, a historic market town located in the southwest corner of Bedfordshire. It has some great waterside pubs and plenty of shops where you can stock up on provisions.
