Reading and return canal boat holiday
133 Miles, 33 Locks, 1 Week Cruise, 12.5 hours per day (ROUTE D)
This week long Reading and return canal boat holiday heads anti-clockwise from the Black Prince London base and joins the main line of the Grand Union Canal – the longest in the UK main – at Bull’s Bridge.
You then head onwards to Brentford, where you join the River Thames. When you reach Brentford you are within walking distance of the beautiful Kew Gardens, which are always well worth a visit for unusual flowers.
As you head along the Thames, there is a wide range of superb, historical sites. Hampton Court is a stunning royal palace once inhabited by King Henry VIII. Test your navigational skills in Hampton Court Maze, which covers half a mile of paths and is one of the most famous mazes in England. For ghoul lovers, the ghost of Catherine Howard (one of Henry VIII’s wives) is said to haunt the palace.
Continue up the river towards Windsor Castle, a residence of Queen Elizabeth and one of the oldest and largest occupied castles in the world. Visitors can tour of the castle, watch the changing of the guard, or take in some of the many exhibitions that are held in the palace.
The route takes you on through Henley, where the Henley Royal Regatta takes place over five days during July, to Reading, where the Thames and the River Kennet meet.
Reading is a large town with several Grade I listed buildings, including Reading Abbey and Greyfriars Church. The Maiwand Lion, a memorial that commemorates the 328 officers who died in the Battle of Maiwand in 1880, is also worth a visit.
Reading also has a host of bars, restaurants, shops, cinemas and theatres plus The Blade skyscraper which, at 128m tall, dominates the skyline.
