Explore Cheshire’s Historic Castles and Stately Homes

Think of castles and you may be forgiven for first imagining castles on the top of crags of Scotland or guarding the clifftops of Dover, but you’ll find surprising number of stately homes and castles in Cheshire, this peaceful and rural part of northwest England.

Nearly 30 stately homes in Cheshire…

There were plenty of stately homes and manor houses built in Cheshire as this was appealing spot for wealthy families during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, who wanted rural tranquility but still be close to the major industrial cities of Manchester, Liverpool and Chester. Landowners were able to enjoy the prestige of a countryside estate whilst sill be involved and connected to the larger economic hubs. This area was also relatively unscathed by wars and conflict, so stately homes and castles in Cheshire were well preserved and maintained

Beeston Castle

Beeston Castle

Originally built in the 1220s, this iconic castle is now mainly ruins but still well worth a visit. It is perched high on a rocky sandstone crag, giving the perfect vantage point on the Cheshire plans. Its formidable design included a deep ditch and a strong curtain wall, making it a challenging target for invaders. Today, visitors can explore its ruins following a strenuous uphill hike, and explore the interesting Bronze Age roundhouse reconstruction in the grounds. Chester Castle

The famous French invader William the Conqueror is credited to have built Chester Castle in 1070. This was originally an earth and timber ‘motte-and-bailey’ castle and in the 12th century it was rebuilt in stone and the outer Bailey added, but now the castle is mainly ruins. You can can look round, it’s a free attraction managed by English Heritage, but most people just enjoy the view of the castle from the Wall Walk (the walk around Chester on the Roman walls).

Cholmondeley Castle

If you want to see a ‘proper’ looking, fully intact castle, then head to Cholmondeley Castle in Cheshire. This unique house belongs to one of the oldest families in England, as they are able to trace their history back to the Norman times, in the 12th century. This castle in Cheshire was built in the early 19th century, in a romantic / gothic style. You can visit the castle grounds and there are special events throughout the year (the castle itself is a private residence and can’t be visited). Find out more about this castle in Cheshire here. 

Stately Homes in Cheshire

Adlington Hall

This stately home is said to be one of the most beautiful country homes in England and is a Grade I listed building. Until very recently it was home to the Legh family, who lived there since the early 14th century. This historic house in Cheshire is a mix of medieval, Tudor, and Georgian stylesand highlights include the Great Hall with its hammer-beam roof and minstrel’s gallery, the Chapel, the Oak Room, and the Drawing Room. The gardens at Adlington Hall feature a maze, a rose garden, and ornamental ponds. You can visit here at certain times of the year.

Tatton Park

Near Knutsford in Cheshire, you’ll find Tatton Park, a vast estate covering over 1,000 acres of parkland. This absolutely beautiful Cheshire country house features a neo-classical mansion, 50 acres of landscaped gardens, 1000 acres of deer park, a rare breed farm and medieval Old Hall. You can explore the elegant state rooms, grand staircase, and the interesting servants’ quarters. The gardens, including Italian, Japanese, and walled kitchen gardens, are fascinating. Hare Hill

Hare Hill is a lovely 10-acre garden managed by the National Trust. Known for its beautiful walled garden filled with flowers, shrubs, and rare plants, you can easily spend a couple of hours here enjoying the scents and sights. Lyme Park, Cheshire

Lyme Park

Fan of Jane Austin? The exterior of Lyme Park is famous for being the home of Darcy in the BBC’s Pride and Prejudice TV series. This stately home in Cheshire, known as ‘Pemberley’ in Jane Autin’s novel, is located on the edge of the Peak District hills, and has been owned by the Legh family for over six centuries. The estate dates back to 1346, but the current house is Tudor, constructed in the 17th century. You can visit inside the hall plus enjoy the formal gardens, a deer park, and a picturesque lake. Arley Hall and Gardens

Arley Hall is a Victorian Manor House in Cheshire that has some beautiful Jacobean-style architecture. Known for its and beautifully preserved interiors, the hall includes the Oak Room, the Library, and the Gallery. The gardens, which are set over 12 acres, are a big hit with keen horticulturalists, with a walled kitchen garden, a fruit garden, and lovely herbaceous borders. Peover Hall

A lesser-known but lovely estate, Peover Hall is an Elizabethan historic house in Cheshire, near Knutsford. Built in 1585, the hall has been meticulously restored and retains many original features, including oak panelling and a stunning grand staircase. The surrounding gardens, with topiary, herbaceous borders, and ancient trees, are a lovely place to spend an hour or two.
