Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games take place over eleven days, between 28 July until 8 August 2022 across the West Midlands, and London. Most events are taking place within easy reach of the midlands waterways if you wanted to combine your narrowboat holiday with some sporting action!

The opening and closing ceremony plus the athletics and para-athletics are taking place at Alexander Stadium, north of Birmingham near Perry; aquatics at Sandwell Aquatics Centre in Smethwick in west Birmingham; badminton and boxing at the NEC in east Birmingham near Sheldon; volleyball and basketball at Smithfield in central Birmingham; cricket at Edgbaston in south Birmingham; gymnastics at the Arena in central Birmingham, next to the Birmingham Canal Old Line.

The nearest place to hire a narrowboat near Birmingham is our canal-side base at  Stoke Prior, where 2 to 10 berth boats are available for short breaks or longer holidays.

Tickets for the Commonwealth Games are now being sold online, with seats still available for the opening and closing ceremonies plus a wide variety of all the sporting events.

Birmingham Festival

The Birmingham 2022 Festival is a £12 million six-month long celebration with the aim of animating the entire West Midlands with ambitious creative works.

For example, the Canal & River Trust will be celebrating events such as ‘Artismo’ between

April and September, looking at art on the canals, from traditional canal art created on boats of the past to immersive experiences and beautiful street art. Past: Present is an event that will celebrate the heritage of the waterways through a series of cultural projects.
